Write Like A Motherfucker

jennyjanuary:

How many women wrote beautiful novels and stories and poems and essays and plays and scripts and songs in spite of all the crap they endured. How many of them didn’t collapse in a heap of “I could have been better than this” and instead went right ahead and became better than anyone would have predicted or allowed them to be. The unifying theme is resilience and faith. The unifying theme is being a warrior and a motherfucker. It is not fragility. It’s strength. It’s nerve. And “if your Nerve, deny you –,” as Emily Dickinson wrote, “go above your Nerve.” Writing is hard for every last one of us—straight white men included. Coal mining is harder. Do you think miners stand around all day talking about how hard it is to mine for coal? They do not. They simplydig.

You need to do the same, dear sweet arrogant beautiful crazy talented tortured rising star glowbug. That you’re so bound up about writing tells me that writing is what you’re here to do. And when people are here to do that they almost always tell us something we need to hear. I want to know what you have inside you. I want to see the contours of your second beating heart.

So write. Not like a girl. Not like a boy. Write like a motherfucker.

The Official Petition to Retain the Sarah Lawrence College Course Catalogue for 2011-2012 and Beyond

“Remember, if you will, move-in day your first year. (If you can’t remember, go dig out your student ID, look at your grinning, baby-faced self on it, and then return to reading.) Remember,…

"I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you."

"…many religious leaders, by circumstance and sometimes by choice, are pulled into ways of being more appropriate for men and women far older than themselves."

Alban - Building Up Congregations and Their Leaders - Malcom L. Warford

"In [some people’s non-religious] view, you have two choices with the Bible. You either believe it is literal truth or you think it’s all a fairy tale. And if you think the belly of the whale is actually a metaphor for something else, you aren’t really religious anyway, you’re an English major."

United Church of Christ: Email - May 4: I Just Don’t Get It Ha. Yay for English (or writing) majors.

Pretty much forever I’ve been fascinated by music performed in the midst of regular life. “Take Away Shows” is hence extra awesome. Here the dialog of the song gets amplified by everything in the scene, the table, their distance even while sitting right across from each other. Magic.

I’ve long had theory that making music in stairwells is really the way to go. (Something about finding out that Led Zeppelin used to record drums in the biggest concrete boxes they could find.)

Extra points because he only sings when he has the conch. (Piggy approves.)

It Gets Better: Apple Employees (by AppleEmployees)

Reposted again from the fb. I would say that I spent more time than one would expect I would in the corporate world because the of the quality, insight, and joy of the people I worked with. These good folks dealt with some serious junk in their lives, and then had the bravery and integrity to try and make things better for the folks that come after them.

I in no way work for Apple anymore. It doesn’t mean I’ve ever stopped being impressed by the vision and excellence that the people there bring to their work and their lives every day. For reals.
